Victorian 12-1/2" Cranberry Spatter Pickle Castor Cruet ~EX~ Up for auction this week, fresh from a mid-Ohio estate, we are offering a fabulous Victorian "Tall & Stately" silver plate and art glass pickle castor dating to the 1890's . Standing an impressive 12-1/2" tall and being made by one of the premier metal workers of their time " Meriden Silver Plate Co." . Look closely at the "3-D cast ornamentation" that decorates the crest , the ornate tongs and Victorian Eastlake or Aesthetic style panels surrounding the base and beautifully styled tall legs . The panels that encircle the base of the castor has bats , crabs , lizards , lobsters and turtles depicted . There is even a "ring" incorporated into the design of the top crest to carry it to the table . The art glass insert is equally impressive being made of a cranberry spatter glass with a satin finish and was most likely produced by the Northwood glass house . If you're looking for something special to add to your collection or Victorian decor, this piece has a lot of visual impact, and is, quite frankly, one of the more dramatic combinations we have seen . The insert fits the frame perfectly....as does the lid to the insert . Very elegant.....Very Beautiful....Very Ornate You will not be disappointed ! The frame is marked on the bottom: "MERIDEN SILVER PLATE Co."....QUADRUPLE PLATE ...#689 It stands 12-1/2" tall and about 5-3/4"" across at its widest point . The insert measure 4-1/4" tall , 3-1/4" dia. (all measurements are approximate). As for condition . . . The frame and lid are in excellent condition and show some silver loss from years of diligent cleaning and polishing ! You can use it as it is , polish it better or have it re-plated.....your choice . The cranberry spatter art glass insert also is in excellent condition, with absolutely NO cracks or repairs . It has a finely ground and polished top surface indicative of a quality glass house of this period and there is some minor roughness on the inside edge from usage that is pretty minor considering its age but needs to be mentioned , If you're looking for something special to add to your collection or to grace your Victorian table setting - this is it!!!
